New Delhi: Officials of Customs department on Wednesday arrested an Indian couple at the Indira Gandhi International Airport after finding 45 hand guns worth Rs 22.5 lakh in their possession.
The Gurgaon residents, identified as Jagjit Singh and Jaswinder Kaur, were accompanied by their 17-month-old daughter.
They returned to India from Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City on July 10 and had been kept under surveillance after Jagjit was caught with the pistols in two trolley bags.
The counter-terrorism unit is investigating the case.
According to a preliminary report, NSG confirmed that the guns are fully functional, PTI quoted a customs official as saying.
Jagjit reportedly got the bags from his brother Manjit in Vietnam after landing there from Paris.
Manjit slipped out of the airport after handing the bags to Jagjit. The female passenger helped her husband remove and destroy the tags of the trolley bag that contained the guns, Customs officials stated.
“Further, examination of these two trolley bags carried by passenger 1 (male passenger) resulted in the recovery of 45 pieces of assorted brand guns having approximate value of Rs 22.5 lakh,” the Customs statement added.
Both accused admitted that they had previously brought 25 pistols to India from Turkey.
