Mumbai: Indian girls, led by senior team member Shafali Verma, lifted the inaugural U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup by routing England in the final at South Africa’s Potchefstroom on Sunday.
Choosing to bowl first after Shafali called correctly at the toss, India skittled out England for a mere 68 runs in 17.1 overs. Titas Sadhu, Archana Devi and Parshavi Chopra bagged two wickets each.
India lost openers Shafali (15) and Shweta Sehrawat (5) with the total on 20. But Soumya Tiwari (24 not out) and Gongadi Trisha (24) settled nerves with a 46-run partnership which sealed the deal.
Indian girls, who beat New Zealand in the semifinals, lost just one match in the tournament – to Australia.
Brief scores: England 68 all out in 17.1 overs (Ryana Macdonald-Gay 19; Titas Sadhu 2/6, Parshavi Chopra 2/13, Archana Devi 2/17). India 69/3 in 14 overs (Soumya Tiwari 24*, Gongadi Trisha 24).
Result: India won by 7 wickets.
