Bhubaneswar: ‘Shakti’, the fusion band comprising of Indian musicians Shankar Mahadevan and Ustad Zakir Hussain, bagged the award for the Best Global Music Album at the Grammys on Monday.
The award was for their latest album ‘This Moment’, which featured eight songs.
The songs were created by Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), Zakir Hussain (tabla), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth) and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist).
The Indian band was nominated with the artists like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido.
Zakir Hussain further incised his name in the history by receiving three Grammy awards in a single night, a first for an Indian artist. Alongside his award for “This Moment,” he also received the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category with Rakesh Chaurasia and the Best Instrumental Composition category.
Mahadevan, in his speech said, “thank you boys and thank you god, family, friends and India. We are proud of you India. Last but not the least, I’d like to dedicate this award to my wife whom every note of my music is dedicated to.”
It is a remarkable year for the Indians at the Grammys with the historic win by Shakti and the individual successes of Ustad Zakir Hussain and Rakesh Chaurasia making it a proud moment on the global stage.
