London: Indian-origin politician and Britain’s former finance minister Rishi Sunak confirmed his bid to become the next Conservative leader and prime minister on Sunday, six weeks after Liz Truss beat him to the top job.
“The United Kingdom is a great country but we face a profound economic crisis. That’s why I am standing to be leader of the Conservative Party and your next prime minister,” he tweeted.
In September, Sunak had lost the race to become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom to Truss in an election held by members of the Conservative party across the country.
Truss, however, resigned on October 20 following a failed tax-cutting budget that rocked financial markets and which led to a revolt within her own Conservative Party. With her 44-day tenure, she was the shortest-serving prime minister in British history.
Sunak has got a nomination from 100 MPs, a threshold set by the party to stand in the election for the premiership. The new prime minister is to be elected by October 28, a deadline set by Truss, media reports said.
