Washington: Indian-origin California Senator Kamala Harris has been named by the US Presidential candidate Joe Biden as his running mate on Tuesday. Harris is the first black woman named to be in race for the vice-president’s post on a major party’s ticket.
Biden acknowledged the Black voters’ vital role in the election in his attempt to beat incumbent Donald Trump.
“I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate,” Biden’s tweet read. Biden said through a text to supporters, “Together, with you, we’re going to beat Trump.”
Both Biden and Harris mull to deliver remarks together in Wilmington on Wednesday.
Fifty-five-year-old Harris, a first-term senator, is also one of the party’s most important leaders and soon became a top contender for the No. 2 spot after her own campaign at the White House ended.
Harris, an Indian American, joins Biden in the race at a time of unprecedented national crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed more than 150,000 lives in the US, a lot more than other countries. Closures of several businesses due to the pandemic also resulted in economic collapse in the country.
