London: An Indian psychiatrist has been sentenced to six years in prison by a court in London.
Identified as Kabir Garg, the psychiatrist worked for the National Health Service Trust in the UK. He has been charged with sharing images of child sexual abuse on a website on the dark web.
The 33-year-old doctor pleaded guilty to taking part in the exploitation of children, reported BBC.
According to the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), Garg was one of the moderators on a site called ‘The Annex’, which had 90,000 members worldwide. Hundreds of links to child abuse material was found to be shared on the site every day.
Garg was arrested last November after NCA found thousands of inappropriate images depicting child sexual abuse on a laptop and memory card at his house.
Medical journals and articles related to psychological impact of sexual abuse on a child were also recovered from his residence.
Garg was accused of facilitating exploitation of children, distributing indecent images of children, making indecent images of children and possessing prohibited images of children.
Garg, who had pleaded guilty to all charges against him at a court hearing in January, was convicted on Friday.
For NHS Trust, Garg’s conviction brought a sense of ‘justice and closure’ to all those impacted by his deplorable actions.
In a similar incident, a former deputy head teacher of a London primary school pleaded guilty to paying and instructing teenagers in India to abuse younger children.
Matthew Smith, 34, from south London, was arrested by NCA last November.
