India’s 16-Year-Old Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa Defeats World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen

New Delhi: Sixteen-year-old Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa defeated world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the eighth round of the online rapid chess tournament Airthings Masters.

Praggnanandhaa won with black pieces in 39 moves on Monday in a Tarrasch variation game to halt Carlsen’s run of three straight wins.

The Indian GM lies in joint 12th spot after eight rounds with eight points.

The Airthings Masters has a 16-player online rapid format, where the winner gets three points, while a draw earns him only one in the preliminary rounds. Seven more rounds remain in the preliminary phase.
