India’s Athletics Dronacharya & PT Usha’s Coach OM Nambiar No More

Kozhikode: Celebrated athletics OM Nambiar passed away on Thursday at the age of 89.

Nambiar, whose most famous student was arguably India’s greatest female athlete PT Usha, guided her to four gold medals — 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay — in the 1986 Asian Games.

His dream of Usha winning an Olympic medal almost came true in the 1984 Los Angeles Games when she missed the bronze medal in 400m by one-100th of a second.

A Padma Shri and Dronacharya awardee, Nambiar coached several other distinguished international athletes like four-time Olympian Shiny Wilson and Vandana Rao.
