Panaji: India’s first sex toy store opened in Goa’s Calangute in February. It is now asked to shut shop as it doesn’t have necessary licence and local people have raised issues about the store.
The store ‘Kama Gizmos’ is part of an online sexual wellness and sex toys site Gizmoswala. The company runs a chain of sexual wellness stores in South India under the name KamaKart.
The panchayat of the area has pointed out that the trade licence has not been issued to the shop.
“Our trade licence application is under process but we were advised by the people working with the panchayat that we can open the store and the licence would be issued in a few days. On Saturday (March 13), the panchayat told us not to open the shop for some days and so we closed it. We were under a lot of pressure from the local authority. Since we do not belong to Goa, we are made an easy target by the locals,” Prawin Ganeshan, chief executive of KamaKart told the Indian Express.
This store was claimed as India’s first legal brick and mortar sex toy store.
The online sale of sex toys reportedly increased by 65% during the lockdown.
