Indonesia Earthquake: Death Toll Rises To 252

Jakarta: The death toll following Monday’s earthquake in Indonesia has risen to 252, AFP reported.

A quake measuring 5.6 on Richter scale shook Indonesia’s main island of Java and the tremors were felt in other places, including capital Jakarta.

The Cianjur local administration in West Java announced the fresh toll in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

According to rescuers, many of those killed and injured were children, BBC reported.

Over 1,000 people have been wounded, officials said.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) informed that 151 people are still missing and 22,000 houses have been damaged. Around 58,000 people have been rendered homeless and taken shelter in several locations in the region.

The earthquake struck a mountainous region, causing landslides which buried many villages and crushed or trapped villagers as walls and roofs caved in.
