Jagatsinghpur: A rare dolphin reportedly succumbed to injuries moments after being rescued from number-4 jetty of Paradip fishing harbour in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district on Sunday.
According to sources, some fishermen spotted the injured mammal near a damaged fishing trawler and informed the Kujang forest department for assistance to safely rescue it. The personnel, however, could not reach it on time and consequently, the local fishermen made attempts to rescue it after the tidal wave receded. But by then the dolphin had died.
It is being suspected that the dolphin of approximately 4.5 feet in length and weighing around 20 to 25 kg, might have suffered injuries after either getting entangled in a fishing net or being hit by a trawler.
The forest department officials later sent it to the veterinary department for postmortem. The exact cause of death can only be ascertained once the postmortem report is obtained, said a department official.
