Khurda: An inmate of Odisha’s Khurda sub-jail was injured after allegedly being attacked by fellow prisoners on the suspicion of being a police informer, late on Sunday.
According to sources, the injured, Prakash Nayak, has been behind bars for his alleged involvement in illegal transport of banned cough syrups. The attack on him is being attributed to the recent police cracked down on a brown sugar racket being run from a jail premises.
“The jail has habitual offenders. Some of them use muscle power against some inmates. Yesterday’s attack was one such incident,” Khurda jailer Krushna Chandra Rout told media.
A case has been registered against seven inmates in connection with the incident, he added.
Earlier this month, seven persons were arrested following interrogation of six other nabbed on February 20 when police had bust the racket. Police also seized mobile phones, which were allegedly used by some inmates to run brown sugar trade from the jail premises.
