Bhubaneswar: Odisha will continue to reel under intense heatwave conditions till April 30, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.
The weather agency has issued red warning for 5 days. “The day temperature may gradually rise by 2°C to 3°C at many places in the state during the next 3 days due to prevailing northwesterly/westerly dry air and high solar insolation. Consequently, mercury levels will remain 4 to 6°C above normal in some districts during the next 4 to 5 days. People are advised to take precautionary measure while going outside during peak hours of the day time between 11 am and 3 pm,” according to the midday bulletin.
Thunderstorm with lightning and light to moderate rain is also likely to affect some parts of districts of Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Keonjhar and Cuttack this afternoon.
By 11,30 am, Jharsuguda had recorded the highest maximum temperature of 40.4°C followed by Sambalpur and Keonjhar at 40°C each, Chandbali (39.6°C), Bhubaneswar (39.2°C), Hirakud (39.2°C), Balasore (39°C), and Rourkela (38.8°C).
HEATWAVE WARNING
In its extended weather outlook, the IMD had earlier said that dry weather with isolated severe heatwave and thunderstorm activity may occur in Odisha between April 26 and May 9.

On Thursday, 22 places recorded 42°C or more as extreme heat continued to batter Odisha for the 11th consecutive day. Jharsuguda was the hottest at 43.8°C followed by Baripada (43.6°C), Nuapada (43.5°C), Talcher (43.4°C), Boudh (43.2°C), Kendrapada, Cuttack and Balangir at 43°C each and Bhubaneswar (42.2°C).
