International Conference On Blue Economy At KIIT: Odisha To Play Vital Role, Says Deputy CM

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s deputy chief minister Pravati Parida emphasised on the state’s strategic importance in India’s blue economy vision.

Speaking at the inauguration of the International Conference on Blue Economy at KIIT, Parida highlighted Odisha’s rich maritime history and said that with a of over 500 km, the state is poised to play a significant role in advancing India’s maritime sector.

The conference, being held in collaboration with Bhubaneswar City Knowledge Innovation Cluster (BCKIC), BRIC-ILS and IIT Ropar, brought together over 800 participants, including policymakers, researchers, and students from across the globe.

They discussed the potential of marine ecosystems in advancing sustainable growth.

There were insightful discussions, exhibitions and a renewed focus on leveraging Odisha’s maritime heritage and resources.

The event also showcased 50 startup companies specialising in marine biotechnology, aquaculture, and tourism, reflecting Odisha’s growing prominence in the blue economy landscape.

Dr Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of Department of Science & Technology, Indian government, highlighted the economic significance of harnessing marine resources.

“Marine ecosystems provide an economic engine that includes fisheries, tourism, and biotechnology, contributing billions annually,” he said.

He pointed out Odisha offers immense potential to drive biotechnological advancements, and its rich marine biodiversity provides a foundation for innovations like marine biomanufacturing, which can create sustainable biofuels and biodegradable materials.

KIIT and KISS founder Dr Achyuta Samanta emphasised the blue economy’s potential to create improved livelihoods and jobs. “Blue economy encompasses a range of activities, including fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism. This conference is a step toward shaping Bharat’s own growth model by utilizing marine resources sustainably,” he observed.

Dr Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary of PSA; Dr Debasish Dash, Director of BRIC-ILS; and Dr Mrutyunjay Suar, DG R&D and Innovation, KIIT and CEO, KIITTBI also shared their perspectives on blue economy opportunities, ranging from biotechnological advancements to fostering international collaborations.
