New Delhi: The Central government on Tuesday ordered the suspension of internet services till 11.59 pm at Delhi’s border points — Singhu, Ghazipur, Tikri, Mukarba Chowk and Nangloi —-and areas adjoining these protest hubs due to intensifying clashes between police and farmers protesting against the new farm laws.
The Home Ministry stated that it was necessary and expedient to order the temporary suspension of internet services in the areas in the interest of maintaining public safety and averting a public emergency, news agency ANI reported.
Sources claimed that Delhi Police had requested Home Minister Amit Shah to declare temporary suspension of internet services after briefing him about the law and order situation in the city.
The sources added that the ministry will review the order after some time and decide on the future course of action.
Meanwhile, many people in the affected areas took to social media to post screenshots of a mobile text message they had received, NDTV reported.
“As per government instructions, internet services have been stopped in your area till further notice,” the message read.
Earlier on Tuesday, reports of farmers breaking barricades to enter Delhi and resorting to vandalism came in from various parts of the city. The entry and exit gates of several metro stations were closed as farmers clashed with police at many areas. The protesting farmers even barged into the Red Fort and hoisted a flag in defiance.
