Cuttack: The magnitude and impact of cyber crime globally was highlighted on the third day of the 62nd Senior Police Officers Conference 2020 held on virtual mode here on Tuesday.
Speaking at the conference as a guest, MM Oberoi, Executive Director, Interpol discussed various issues involved in tackling cyber crime. He stressed on the importance of actionable intelligence, forensics, capacity building and training, joint cyber crime investigation by teams cutting across district, state and
national boundaries, and the role of research and development to effectively
counter cyber crime.
Speaking on “Technology in Aid of Policing”, Prof A Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur highlighted the rapid and disruptive advancements in the field of communications and the advent of technologies such as 56 and Internet of Things (10 T).
He called upon senior police officers to harness these technologies to meet the challenges posed by terrorism, Left wing extremism and mass gatherings. He also spoke on how the new age technologies can be applied in intelligence
gathering, crime detection and law enforcement.
A senior officer of Ministry of Home Affairs made a presentation on “Countering Social Media Campaigns”. The rapid rise of social media as a tool for mass mobilisation has become a challenge in law & order management, he said.
A discussion was held on how online radicalisation, fake news and rumour generation by influencers and anonymous individuals and groups can impact internal security. Strategies for countering such campaigns were discussed.
