Tehran: Iran has issued an arrest warrant and sought Interpol’s help to detain US President Donald Trump and others, who they believe carried out a drone strike that killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad.
Tehran prosecutor Ali Alqasimehr said Trump and more than 30 others face “murder and terrorism charges,” the ISNA news agency reported. They are accused of involvement in the January 3 strike that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad.
Alqasimehr stressed that Iran would continue to pursue his prosecution even after his presidency ends.
Alqasimehr was also quoted as saying that Iran had requested a “red notice” be put out for Trump and the others, to mark the highest level arrest request issued by Interpol.
The France-based Interpol, based in Lyon is yet to respond to Iran’s request.
Realistically, Trump faces no danger of arrest, but the charges against him once more highlighted the heightened tensions between Iran and the United States since Trump unilaterally announced America’s withdrawal from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.
