Bhubaneswar: An Iraqi national, suffering from a rare skull base disease, has recovered after undergoing surgery at the SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM), here.
After recovering from COVID, 38-year-old Iraqi citizen Jasim Kareem Faran Chnani had developed a swelling on forehead and left eye which was accompanied by headache for one month.
The doctors in Iraq diagnosed that he was afflicted by Pott’s Puffy Tumor with Invasive Fungal Frontal Sinusitis and Orbital involvement. As the treatment for the disease was not available in the country, Jasim’s family came to India.
They met Dr Radhamadhab Sahu, senior consultant and Head of ENT and Skull Base Surgery at SUM Ultimate Medicare. A team of doctors led by Dr Sahu performed the surgery on Jasim.
The team opted for an endoscope assisted minimally invasive supraorbital keyhole approach along with transnasal endoscopic approach to remove the problem. “This approach avoided facial deformity which is a major drawback of other external approaches,” Dr Sahu said.
He further said Pott’s Puffy tumor was an infection of the marrow of the forehead bone and normally children and adolescents are affected by it compared to adults. “Patients may present with redness of forehead skin along with soft, boggy, fluctuating swelling in the forehead or scalp or around the eye. This may be accompanied by headache or complaints like nasal blockage and discharge,” Dr Sahu said.
Jasim, who is on the way to recovery, was happy with the treatment and thanked the team that performed his surgery. “All staff including the housekeeping personnel were involved and dedicated in their service. They made me feel at home,” he said.
Incidentally, Dr Sahu had successfully treated another Iraqi national Hasoon Owaid Oglah al-Shadawi (77), who suffered from Central Skull Base Osteomyelitis, also a rare skull base disease, around a month ago.
