Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that the chances of cyclogenesis (formation of a depression) over South Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood in the Bay of Bengal in the next 96-120 hours were ‘high’.

A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over South Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood around May 4. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around May 6 and become more marked during the subsequent 24 hours.

The IMD is yet to make any official forecast on the path of the low-pressure system.

Issuing a warning for fishermen, the IMD said that on May 4 and 5, squally wind with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph will very likely prevail over South Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal.

May 6: Squally wind with speeds reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph likely to prevail over Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast and Eastcentral Bay of Bengal.

May 7: Squally wind with speeds reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph likely to prevail over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea.
