Is ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ Bollywood’s Biggest Disaster To Date?

New Delhi: Three weeks after it was released on August 11, Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha has yet to redeem itself. An official adaptation of ‘Forrest Gump,’ Aamir Khan’s comeback film after four years has failed to create the magic usually associated with the star.

Compared to its Rs 180 crore budget, Laal Singh Chaddha has hardly earned any money, reports India Today. It recorded a 15-20% occupancy on Day 1, quite unlike an Aamir Khan film. The boycott and cancel trend also affected the film’s box office collection. The film has ended its run with collections under Rs 60 crore reportedly, thereby ending up as one of the biggest disasters of Indian cinema to date. However, in the overseas markets, the film has been dominating, as per reports, the publication added.

The film was shot in partnership with Viacom 18 and Aamir Khan’s production company. Although both are yet to break their silence on the film’s dismal response, rumours are rife that Viacom 18 Studios are miffed with the superstar and are blaming him for its failure. According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, Aamir Khan did not inform or consult with Viacom 18 before taking any decisions on marketing or promotion. The report further suggests that Aamir Khan’s decision-making has negatively affected Viacom 18’s reputation as a film studio.
