New Delhi: Former Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy has raked up the issue of Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship.
Swamy, known to stir controversies, approached the Delhi High Court on Friday seeking directions to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to cancel Rahul’s Indian citizenship.
According to a Bar and Bench report, Swamy wrote to the Home Ministry in 2019 claiming that the current Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha was one of the directors and secretary of a firm named Backops Limited which was registered in the United Kingdom in 2003.
Swamy claimed that the firm’s annual returns filed on October 10, 2005 and October 31, 2006 showed that the Congress MP declared his nationality as British.
Swamy further alleged that in its dissolution application on February 17, 2009, Backops Limited again mentioned Rahul’s nationality as British, as per Bar and Bench.
Swamy pointed out violation of Article 9 of the Constitution of India and Indian Citizenship Act, 1955.
After getting Swamy’s letter, MHA wrote to Rahul on April 29, 2019, asking him to state the factual position within a fortnight.
Five years down the line, there is no clarity on the Home Ministry’s decision on Rahul, hence Swamy has moved the high court.
