New Delhi: Twelve Opposition MPs were on Monday suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the rest of the winter session on account of ‘unruly behaviour’ during the monsoon session of Parliament.
The suspended MPs are Syed Naseer Hussain, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Phulo Devi Netam, Chhaya Verma, Ripun Bora and Rajmani Patel of the Congress; Priyanka Chaturvedi, Anil Desai of the Shiv Sena; Elamaram Kareem of the CPI-M, Binoy Viswam of the CPI, Dola Sen and Shanta Chhetri of the Trinamool.
In the morning, Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu had said that disruptions and unruly conduct of some members during the last monsoon session continue to haunt all. He urged the members to draw the right lessons from it as all sections of the house and the country ended up as losers from the derailed monsoon session.
Notably, Union Minister Piyush Goyal had urged the Rajya Sabha Chairman in August to form a special committee that would investigate the House proceedings in detail and take strict action against such MPs. He had accused Opposition MPs of disrespecting Parliament by standing on tables, breaking glasses and manhandling women marshals, India Today reported.
The Monsoon Session was scheduled to end on August 13, but both the Houses had to be adjourned sine die two days early due to constant disruptions and protests over the Pegasus snooping row and the three farm laws. The Opposition and the Centre blamed one another for the commotion.
On August 11, several Opposition MPs climbed on the officials’ table, waved black cloth and threw files when the House began a discussion on farmers’ protest against new reform laws. Many stood on the table where the parliamentary staff sits right below the chair, while others crowded around it shouting anti-government slogans.
