Chattogram: Ishan Kishan avenged the humiliation of Team India’s ODI series loss to Bangladesh almost single-handedly in the final match of the series here on Saturday.

Getting a chance to play because of skipper Rohit Sharma’s injury in the second game, the left-handed opener went on a rampage to plunder a record-shattering 210 off 131 deliveries. Along with Virat Kohli (113), who hit his 44th ODI and 72nd international hundred, Kishan added 290 runs for the second wicket as India posted a massive 409/8 in 50 overs.

India, having lost the first 2 matches, were asked to bat first as Bangladesh chased a first-ever series sweep against India.

But the Patna-born youngster, who is Mumbai Indians’ wicketkeeper-batsman, had other ideas. In a breathtaking display of dazzling strokeplay, Kishan completed his double century in 126 balls. He looked to be on course for surpassing Rohit Sharma’s ODI record of 264 before falling for 210, which was studded with 23 fours and 10 sixes.

Kishan erased West Indian Chris Gayle’s record of scoring the fastest double century in ODI history – off 138 balls against Zimbabwe in the 2015 World Cup.

Kishan reached 100 in 85 balls, and then shifted to fifth gear — taking 18 more balls to reach 150 and 23 more to reach 200.

Kishan thus became only the fourth Indian batsman to hit a double hundred in 50-over cricket. Rohit alone has three 200-plus scores, while Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were the first two to achieve the milestone.

The 24-year-old batter also became the first cricketer to convert his maiden ODI century into a double ton.

Kishan’s pyrotechnics helped Team India post a 400-plus total in an ODI for the sixth time. Their best effort in a 50-over game was 418/5 against the West Indies in 2011 – the match in which Sehwag scored 219.

INDIA’S DOUBLE-CENTURIONS IN ODIs

* Rohit Sharma – 264 vs Sri Lanka (2014)

* Virender Sehwag – 219 vs West Indies (2011)

* Ishan Kishan – 210 vs Bangladesh (2022)

* Rohit Sharma – 209 vs Australia (2013)

* Rohit Sharma – 208 vs Sri Lanka (2017)

* Sachin Tendulkar – 200* vs South Africa (2010).
