ISRO’s EV Lithium Battery Technology For Sale

Bengaluru: The country’s premier space agency, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has put up its lithium battery technology for sale to bidders. Successful bidders can get the technology for Rs 1 Crore on a non-exclusive basis.

This indigenous technology developed by ISRO will help start-ups and industry players to locally manufacture lithium batteries of various sizes and capacities to primarily be used in electric vehicles (EV). Currently, car manufacturers such as Mahindra Reva, Tata are importing batteries from China and other south-east Asian countries. ISRO’s technology is expected to reduce costs of electric vehicles in India. This is in line with the government’s plan to make all new cars electric by 2030. The lithium-ion battery technology will also find use in energy storage, space tech and other electric mobility solutions.

ISRO has floated a request for qualification and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, will carry out the technical process. There will be a pre-bidding meet on the August 13 and the bidding proposals will be opened on August 14.

Earlier, in March, Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) had signed up with ISRO to set up a manufacturing facility in Bengaluru for such batteries.
