New Delhi: The results and trends of Tuesday’s Lok Sabha elections surprised many, especially after the way exit polls predicted an overwhelming majority for BJP (310-plus) and NDA (360-400).
The BJP is struggling to cross 245, which is much less than halfway mark of 272 on its own, while NDA is not even reaching 300, forget 400.
However, BJP is still the single-largest party and NDA (294) around 20 seats clear of majority. Though low key, Narendra Modi is expected to take oath as India’s Prime Minister for the third straight time.
But Congress is interpretating the result as a major achievement for the grand old party, and a setback for Modi.
A beaming Rahul Gandhi, who marched to the AICC headquarters with party president Mallikarjun Kharge, mother Sonia Gandhi and other party leaders, around 5 pm, lashed out at the PM by saying that this is a “huge message” for Modi.
“The main thing that this election has said, the country has clearly and unanimously stated is that we do not want Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to be involved in running of this country. We do not like the way they have run this country. We do not appreciate the way they have attacked the Constitution. That is a huge message to Narendra Modi.”
Is he suggesting about a possibility of government formation by the INDIA bloc?
Rahul played it safe, at least for the time being.
“We are going to have a meeting with our INDIA alliance partners tomorrow… we respect our alliance partners and won’t make statements to the press without asking them. These questions will be raised and answered there,” Rahul stated.
Accusing Modi and Shah of intimidating the institutions of India, Rahul said: “We fought this election not just against BJP but also the institutions, the governance structure of the country, CBI, ED, judiciary because all these institutions were captured by Amit Shah & Narendra Modi ji,” Rahul told mediapersons.
Rahul also thanked UP for defeating the BJP and saving the Constitution.
“The poor people, the labourers in the country have saved the Constitution of India,” said Rahul.
