Mumbai: Having achieving the cherished dream of lifting the T20 World Cup on Saturday, Team India were stranded in Barbados as Hurricane Beryl hit the Caribbean island nation.
After being confined to their hotel rooms for three days as the airport was shut down, the entire contingent finally flew out from Grantley Adams International Airport this afternoon (early morning Barbados time) in a special Air India charter flight sent to bring home the heroes.
The men in blue, who beat South Africa by 7 runs in a thrilling final to emerge unbeaten champions, will land in Delhi on Thursday morning.
All arrangements have been made for a royal reception.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet the players and support staff before the entire squad flies to Mumbai, where the champions will have an open-top bus parade from Nariman Point to Wankhede Stadium.
And none other than the skipper has extended an open invitation to fans who have stood by the team through thick and thin.
“We want to enjoy this special moment with all of you. So let’s celebrate this win with a victory parade at Marine Drive & Wankhede on July 4th from 5:00pm onwards. It’s coming home,” Rohit post on X.
The Team India captain earlier posed with teammate Suryakumar Yadav to confirm that the World Cup winners are finally heading home after the storm delayed their departure.
