‘It’s My Last Decade As An Actor’: Ranbir Kapoor Reveals Plans For Directorial Debut

Mumbai: Actor Ranbir Kapoor has revealed plans to venture into filmmaking as a director in the next two to three years, expressing his desire to explore a new creative role behind the camera.

The actor also hinted that he considers the coming decade his last as an actor.

In an interview with BBC Asian News Network, Ranbir revealed that although he is yet to finalise the details of his first directorial venture, he already has an idea of the kind of story he wants to tell.

He hopes to take the project on floors in the next two to three years, after wrapping up his current acting commitments.

The actor shared that he began working on a script a few months ago but soon realised that the writing process was far more challenging than he had anticipated.

The experience has given him a newfound appreciation for writers and storytellers who work behind the scenes to bring narratives to life on screen.

He also spoke about the creative satisfaction of directing, particularly the opportunity to bring together people from different fields to collectively tell a story.

Speaking about his interest in direction, Ranbir said, “I just started writing a script a couple of months back, and it’s so hard to create. I have so much respect for writers and creators. ‘How do you create?’ It’s exciting because I truly believe that after a musician, if there’s somebody who feels a creative high, it’s the director. An actor’s high is very superficial but the director, when he directs a movie, however good or bad, the opportunity to tell a story and get all these people together to tell your story, it’s just a beautiful experience and I hope I can do it.”

While the concept of his directorial debut is yet to take final shape, Ranbir already has a fair idea of the kind of stories he wants to explore.

Citing Life Is Beautiful, It’s a Wonderful Life and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani’s films among his favourites, the actor said he would like to make a family drama that leaves audiences with a heartwarming, feel-good experience.

Ranbir also opened up about balancing his directorial ambitions with his acting career.

Revealing that he typically works for around 100 to 125 days a year, the actor said his schedule leaves him ample time to write and develop stories.

Speaking about his future plans, he said, “I work only 100-125 days a year; I have a lot of time to write stories. I’ve never ever been so busy, never ever been so committed. I’ve always had one film out, and then I would start working on the other film. But, I guess, it’s my last decade as an actor; will I get to play these parts? I do want to kind of pivot towards direction. I don’t want to direct myself for sure. I really want to get these films done (Brahmastra 2, Animal 2 and Ramayana Part 2), and really get on floors with my directorial debut within 2 or 3 years, I hope.”

On the work front, following Ramayana: Part One, Ranbir will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, which also stars Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal.

The film is scheduled to release in theatres on January 21, 2027. His upcoming projects also include Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal Park and Ramayana: Part Two, which is slated for release in 2028.
