London: Rishi Sunak will take over as UK’s first Asian-origin Prime Minister after being elected leader of Conservative Party following the resignation of Liz Truss.
The 42-year-old Sunak’s path was cleared after Penny Mordaunt pulled out of the race. Sunak, the son-in-law of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, was the only one to have garnered the support of 100 Conservative Party members – mandatory to run for leadership.
Sir Graham Brady announced former Chancellor Sunak as the leader of Conservative Party.
Acting Prime Minister Truss and Sunak will meet King Charles on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace. Truss will formally tender her resignation and the King will then formally appoint Sunak as PM.
Last month, Sunak had lost out to Truss in the race for Prime Ministership after scandal-hit Boris Johnson had stepped down.
