Fast food and junk food aren’t interchangeable terms and confuse people who want to eat healthy. Not all fast food is bad for you, and some junk food isn’t really ‘fast’ as well. Fast and junk foods are defined in many ways in various dictionaries and culinary forums, and by food connoisseurs.
Although slightly different, the essence of these numerous definitions boils down to:
Fast food — A type of food you get from a restaurant designed to deliver the order in the quickest possible way.
Junk food — Food with extremely low nutritional value, sometimes called rich in ‘empty calories’.
These basic understandings make it perfectly clear that fast food can be both healthy and unhealthy. Junk food, on the other hand, is decidedly not good for you. The ‘junk’ component of the term refers to the nutritional value of a product. For example, fries (and almost anything deep-fried and processed) can be categorised as junk food. The amount of saturated fats in these products significantly outweighs the amount of essential nutrients. Therefore, they become ‘empty’ from a nutritional point of view.
What is Junk Food
Junk food is a category that includes food containing extremely low nutritional value. They have quite a high presence of added sugar, salt, or saturated fat. Therefore one should not take junk food as part of any main diet. Junk food is also called food rich in ‘empty calories’. If you are a person with a healthy BMI value, it won’t be a huge issue to consume junk food occasionally in small quantities. However, if one is conscious about losing weight, it would be better to refrain from eating junk food on a daily basis. Junk food can increase the chance of getting fat and obese. Excessive intake of junk food can also increase the risk of contracting some chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancers, cardiovascular disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
What is Fast Food
Fast food is basically quick and processed meals easily prepared and served in restaurants and snack bars. They are basically a cheaper alternative to home-cooked meals. However, just like junk food, fast food can also be high in sugar, salt, calorie, and saturated fat content. The fast-food culture has bloomed as a result of the busy and tight lifestyle of modern-day professionals who are unable to spare time to prepare a healthy home-cooked meal. However, as an alternative, some fast food owners have taken a step to open salad bars, grilled chicken, lean meats, and wholegrain buns in their fast-food restaurants. This helps serve nutritious fast food to nutrition-conscious consumers.
Although some fast-food restaurant owners are concerned about offering the customer a healthier menu, the majority still cook their food using lots of butter and gallons of cooking oil. Therefore, those with diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes should limit consuming fast food.
Can either of them be Healthy?
While junk food decidedly cannot be healthy, fast food can, and often is, a rather good option for a quick meal. If one wants to eat healthy and fast, then research menus of the restaurants nearby and assess every dish.
A salad is fast food as well, and that is sure to be healthy if it doesn’t include any processed products or fat seasonings. Another great option for healthy fast food is sushi. Sandwiches containing healthy ingredients and other similar foods are ‘in the green’ as well, which includes healthy tacos and burritos. Even a veggie pizza seasoned with non-processed tomato sauce and olive oil is healthy. Thus one can easily enjoy the majority of traditional fast foods as long as it is bought from the right places. Bear this in mind, if one wants to eat healthy one should understand that planning meal time can make any café a fast food place. As these businesses understand what regular meal times are, they usually pre-cook some of the dishes to ensure they can be served quickly.
In addition, using some basic meal preparation ideas will help ensure that one’s fridge always has some components for a quick and healthy meal. This will avoid intake of fast and junk food.
Similarities between Junk Food and Fast Food
They are two alternatives for the modern-day citizen instead of home-cooked healthy diets; fast food can also be junk food; both fast food and junk food are food sources rich in sugar, salt, calories, or fat; excessive intake of fast food and junk food can boost the risk of getting diseases such as diabetes, cancers, and heart disease.
In a way junk food is a category of food that includes food containing an extremely low nutritional value. Fast food basically includes quick and processed meals easily prepared and served in restaurants and snack bars. Junk food basically refers to food with extremely low nutritional value, while fast food refers to easily accessible food that can be bought quickly from restaurants. Junk food is always low in its nutritional value. However, fast food can come in both high nutritious and low nutritious options.
Downside of Junk Food and Fast Food
As a nutrition consultant, in my opinion both these diets are harmful from a health point of view. However, if one of the two is chosen, then fast food will be more suitable as it may contain a mixture of fresh stuff like green vegetables, fruits and grains to some extent. On the other hand, unhealthy meals do not contain fresh things at all. However, if you are travelling, you can include it as a meal. That is, if there is no catering facility.
Due to the amount of sodium in unhealthy (junk food) food being very high, one can get headaches and migraines just after a hearty meal. As carbs are very high in the long run, one may have acne and other skin challenges. And, of course, eating unhealthy meals could make someone depressed and lethargic. This also leads to an increase in blood sugar and insulin resistance. As in junk food, fast food is also high in sodium. Increased sodium levels can cause excessive water retention in the body, which can lead to bloating. Carbs and sugar present in fast food can cause cavities in the teeth.
Thus both fast food and junk food are injurious to health. So avoid including such things in your regular diet to keep your body healthy and hearty for a long time.
