Dhenkanal: An under-trial prisoner (UTP) lodged in Dhenkanal jail in Odisha died while undergoing treatment in a hospital with his family alleging that he was beaten to death.
The deceased has been identified as Athani Dehuri (42) of Beshalia village under the jurisdiction of Sadar police station in the district.
According to sources, Athani was arrested on Sunday by the Excise department on the charge of smuggling liquor and sent to the jail on judicial custody the following day.
As he fell ill on Wednesday, the prison authorities admitted him to the hospital. However, during the treatment, the doctor declared him dead.
Claiming that Athani was tortured in the jail, his family and relatives have alleged that he has been beaten to death. The family also complained that they were not informed that Athani was admitted to the hospital.
The family members have demanded a high-level investigation into the incident.
