Sambalpur:A day after being sent to prison, an inmate was found hanging inside the high-security circle jail in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Dharanidhara Mahananda (35) of Sindurapanka area under the jurisdiction of Sadar police station.
Sources said Mahananda’s body was found hanging with a towel from the skylight of a bathroom of the jail.
The deceased was reportedly arrested in a case relating to family dispute and dowry. He was lodged in the jail on Saturday.
After the prioson staff and other inmates spotted him hanging, the jail authorities rushed him to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) at Sambalpur, where he was declared dead by the doctors.
Though the jail inmate was suspected to have died by suicide, the exact reason will be known after the postmortem report is obtained, police said.
While a postmortem is being conducted, police have launched an investigation into the incident.
