Bhubaneswar: It proved to be a boon for a woman under trial prisoner (UTP) lodged in Ganjam district’s Aska sub-jail. Her one-and-half-year-old baby daughter has found a new lease of life, thanks to the efforts from the jail officials.
The timely intervention and facilitation of advanced surgery by the jail officials and the district health administration by taking her to Bengaluru saved the baby’s life.
The woman accused of murdering her husband has been behind the bars along with her daughter for the last four months. While the baby girl was suffering from fever frequently, the jail authorities admitted her to a hospital where she was diagnosed with a hole in her heart, a congenital condition, reported The New Indian Express.
The jail officials were then apprised by the doctors about the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) scheme under National Rural Health Mission. They advised them to approach the district programme manager regarding the matter.
The case was processed by the district programme manager and as the child needed to be taken outside Odisha for treatment, the manager asked the jail officials to get the state government approval for the same.
Accordingly, the Director-General of Prisons Santosh Kumar Upadhyay wrote to the government. The jail officials secured the government permission to shift her to Bengaluru for heart surgery.
Three officials were deployed by the Ganjam SP to escort the mother and daughter to Bengaluru. The jail officials and an NRHM pharmacist accompanied them. The girl was admitted to a hospital in the Karnataka capital on January 30 and she was operated upon 15 days after the infection was brought under control.
“As the girl still had infection post-surgery, she was kept under observation and discharged on Friday after she was completely cured,” an official of Aska sub-jail was quoted as saying by TNIE. They are expected to reach Berhampur on Monday.
