Bhubaneswar: Jailer of Sambalpur circle jail Sushant Kumar Rout
was suspended on Thursday in connection with seizure of Rs 18 lakh in cash from his office chamber on Sunday.
The suspension came after two DIG-level officers submitted their inquiry report to additional director general (prisons) Arun Kumar Ray, who recommended a vigilance probe into the matter.
The crackdown was part of simultaneous raids on more than 12 prisons, including Choudwar, Jharpara, Keonjhar and other prominent jails in the state. Apart from the cash, police recovered nine cell phones and narcotics from Rout’s office.
Meanwhile, Jharpara jail superintendent Rabindra Nath Swain informed that around 90 CCTV cameras would be installed at strategic points in and around the jail premises within the next four days to improve the security system and effectively monitor the activities of criminals lodged in the jail.
