Bhubaneswar: A jailor and two warders of the high-security special jail at Jharpada in Odisha capital sustained injuries after being allegedly attacked by a group of inmates on Friday.
As per preliminary information, five three prison inmates allegedly attacked the jailor with a blade, causing him injuries on the hand. Two jail warders were also injured in the blade attack.
Sources said a scuffle broke out between two groups of inmates. Hearing the noise, the jailor rushed to the spit to defuse the situation but the prisoners slashed his hand with a blade.
Two warders were also attacked and injured when they tried to intervene.
As the fight turned ugly, prison staff pressed the siren button after which a team from Laxmisagar police station rushed to the spot.
The injured jailer told reporters that the accused inmates, mostly drug addicts, were upset after being put in the high-security ward and were demanding that they be shifted elsewhere.
It is still not clear as to why the accused resorted to such attack and how they got access to a blade in the jail.
Jharpada Special Jail superintendent said the accused were agitated as they had been kept in a high-security ward considering they were habitual offenders. A detailed report on the jail’s state-of-affairs will be submitted after inquiry, he added.
A case has been registered at Laxmisagar police station in connection with the incident.
