Jaipur: A 25-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in jail by a Jaipur court after he was convicted of raping a nine-year-old girl nine days ago. This earned a praise from Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot for such a fast verdict.
The special POCSO court’s verdict in the case came within five working days in which the accused was convicted. Special Judge Vikash Kumar Khandelwal also imposed a penalty of Rs 2 lakh on convict Kamlesh Meena.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Jaipur South) Harendra Kumar, the judgment was delivered within five working days of the filing of challan. The challan was submitted to the court within 18 hours of the registration of the case, he said.
Kumar said POCSO court number 3 of Jaipur sentenced Meena to 20 years in jail after being convicted of raping the minor girl on the evening of September 26.
Under relevant sections of IPC and POCSO, the case was registered with the Kotkhawda police station on the intervening night of September 26 and 27. The accused was arrested early morning the next day.
“A charge sheet was filed against him within 18 hours of the registration of the case. The court completed the trial within five working days and pronounced the judgment today,” DCP was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot welcomed the decision and said this is an example of the Rajasthan government’s commitment to providing justice to victims.
“The Rajasthan government will ensure justice to every victim by ensuring the harshest punishment to every rapist. The steps taken by our government for this are reflected in such decisions,” Gehlot tweeted.
