Jajpur: Regional Transport Officer (RTO) in-charge of Jajpur town Manoj Behera was run over by a speeding lorry near Sulia under Panikoili police station limits on National Highway-16 late on Sunday night.
Sources said Behera had gone to Sulia on his Hyundai Creta SUV (OD-01-AM-0007) accompanied by his colleague to check minor mineral laden trucks when a speeding lorry carrying chips ran over him.
As told by some truck drivers present on the spot, Behera was checking a chips laden truck (OD-01-K-5577) when he was run over and crushed by a speeding chips laden lorry (OD-04-K-9475).
Following information, Jajpur SP Charan Singh Meena, Tehsildar Sapan Nanda and IIC of Panikoili Police Station Sarat Patra and IIC of Korei Police Station Chinmay Sahu rushed to the spot.
The body of Behera was later taken to Jajpur district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.
Police later seized the lorry and arrested its driver.
Sources in the locality said some stone mafia might have orchestrated the murder of the RTO.
Police has begun investigation into the incident.
