Jalgaon: A man, suspecting his wife of having an affair, attacked her with an axe early on Saturday morning in the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra. Relatives rushed Shital Sonawane to hospital, where she died during treatment. Her husband, identified as Somnath Sonawane, has been arrested and charged with murder.
Their 10-year-old son suffered serious injuries to his arm and is now admitted to a hospital, Maheshwari Reddy, SP, Jalgaon, said.
The incident comes barely four months after a similar one in the same district, in which two children were killed. On November 27, 2024, Sanjay Pavara attacked his wife and two children with an axe in the Chopda Taluka of Jalgaon. Pavara suspected his wife of having an affair.
Neighbours had then claimed that the couple fought bitterly after which Pavara attacked his family. While the two children died on the spot, his wife was taken to a hospital in Dhule where she underwent brain surgery. It is not known whether she survived.
Friday’s incident in the Dharangaon Taluka of the same district is eerily similar to the one that occurred in Chopda.
Somnath Sonawane and his wife Shital had a bitter argument on Friday evening after he accused her of meeting someone behind his back. Shital fell asleep later, hugging her son Sidhu. Sonawane then brought down his axe on Shital’s head. Sidhu’s arm seems to have come in between, due to which it got injured.
The police are now interrogating Sonawane and also speaking to neighbours to learn more about the incident.
