Mumbai: The Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Animal’ might have left cash registers ringing at the box office, but for veteran screenwriter, lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar the film promoted violence and misogyny.
In a recent interview with Mojo Story, Javed criticised the audience for liking the film and making it a big hit.
“I did not opine on Animal, I opined on the audience. Honestly! I believe if 10-12-15 people have made a film with wrong values… if 10-12 people produce a song which is vulgar, crude, obscene… that’s not the problem. If 15 out of 140 crore people are perverts or have wrong values, it’s okay, doesn’t matter. When that thing goes out in the market and becomes a superhit, that’s the problem,” Javed told Barkha Dutt on Mojo Story.
When Javed was asked why ‘Animal’ became a hit with the audience, he wittily replied, “I think the basic title tells you why. The title is self-explanatory.”
He added that if films like ‘Animal’ are minting over Rs 500 crore at the domestic box office, then it is because the society is turning toxic day by day.
‘Animal’ director Sandeep Reddy Vanga advised Javed to watch the film to understand its context.
Sandeep targeted Javed’s son Farhan Akhtar’s Prime Video thriller ‘Mirzapur’ for its obscene language.
Hitting back at Sandeep, Javed stated that he is glad that the ‘Animal’ maker couldn’t find any derogatory content in his projects.
