Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved a proposal to accord university status to the famous Vikram Deb Autonomous College in Jeypore in Koraput district, one of the oldest educational institutions in the state.
The Chief Minister expressed the happiness that the long standing demand of intellectuals and students of the undivided Koraput district has now been fulfilled, official sources said.
The college, which was under Berhampur University, is slated to celebrate platinum jubilee on Friday.
Established by Vikram Deo Verma, the erstwhile ruler of Jeypore, in 1947, the college has been playing a significant role in imparting quality education in the region. The college had got its autonomous status in 2004.
The college at present conducts 17 Post Graduate and as many Under Graduate programmes, apart from BBA, BCA and B.Ed courses. Around 4,000 students are now studying in the educational institution.
