Bhubaneswar: With cold and dry air blowing from northwest towards Odisha amid weakening of the western disturbance, the mercury plummeted to 6°C in Jharsuguda in the last 24 hours, senior meteorologist Umasankar Das posted on X on Thursday.
The is the lowest night temperature, 5.8°C below normal, recorded in the plains of the state this season.
Jharsuguda had recorded 8°C the previous day.
He further stated that the mercury dropped 5.4°C in the industrial town in the last two days. The night temperature in Jharsuguda was 13.4°C at 5.30 am on January 7 and 9.6°C at the same time on January 8 and 8°C on January 9.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), G Udayagiri, the hill station in Kandhamal, was the coldest at 5.2°C. The other places where night temperature dropped below 10°C include Rourkela (6.4°C), Phulbani (6.8°C), Semiliguda in Koraput (7.1°C) Daringbadi (8°C), Sundargarh (8.2°C), Keonjhar (8.8°C), Bhawanipatna (9.1°C) and Sonepur (9.8°C).
The state capital of Bhubaneswar recorded 15.1°C while Cuttack saw the mercury drop to 13.5°C.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted no large change in the night temperature for next two days and a rise of 2-4°C thereafter.
