Reliance has launched a WiFi based calling service in select circles. Similar to Airtel WiFi calling, Jio VoWiFi has one distinct advantage over Bharti’s service. Jio’s service works with all broadband connections, while Airtel works with only its broadband network.
The new service is reportedly available in New Delhi NCR, Kerala, Maharashtra and Kolkata Circle.
The official Jio Care account, however, has denied it being available in Delhi. This indicates it could be a test trial as many users on Twitter have shared screenshots of using the service.
“Voice-over-Wi-Fi enables you to make and receive Voice/Video calls and send SMS over any Wi-Fi connection. The service is available on selective handset models that are compatible with using VoWiFi. This service is currently available only in Kerala, Maharashtra and Kolkata Circle. There are no additional charges for using the service. However, voice, data and SMS usage charges apply as per your current plan,” the official Jio Care account stated.
It is safe to estimate that the service will cover the entire country soon. To enable VoWiFi on smartphones (both Airtel and Jio), users will have to turn on both VoLTE and WiFi after which the WiFi calling icon will show.
