New Delhi: Acclaimed Urdu poet and filmmaker Gulzar and Sanskrit scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya were named as recipients of the 58th Jnanpith Award for 2023 on Saturday.
Gulzar, renowned for his contributions to Hindi cinema, is recognised as one of the most eminent Urdu poets of contemporary times. He has previously been honoured with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu in 2002, Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013, Padma Bhushan in 2004. He also won five National Film Awards for his remarkable work.
Rambhadracharya, who serves as the founder and leader of Tulsi Peeth in Chitrakoot, is a distinguished Hindu spiritual figure, educator and author of over 100 books.
“It has been decided to give the award (for 2023) to eminent writers from two languages: Sanskrit litterateur Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and well-known Urdu litterateur Shri Gulzar,” Jnanpith selection committee said in a statement.
Goan writer Damodar Mauzo was conferred with the Jnanpith Award for 2022.
