Bhubaneswar: Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) plans to expand its Angul steel plant’s capacity from 6 MTPA to 25.2 MTPA by 2030. According to current capacities, the expansion will make the plant the largest in the world in a single location.
JSPL Chairman Naveen Jindal informed this to Odisha Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra during a meeting in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. Jindal also met Steel and Mines Secretary Deoranjan Kumar Singh.
Last month, a high-level clearance authority headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had approved the proposed expansion of JSPL’s Angul steel plant.
During his meeting with Mahapatra, Jindal thanked the Odisha government for approving the steel plant’s proposed expansion.
JSPL’s Managing Director VR Sharma, Director Finance NK Mishra, Manish Kharbanda and other senior officials accompanied Jindal to the meeting.
After the meeting, Jindal told the media that he was confident of the Odisha government’s industry-friendly policies towards protecting the interests of the state-based value addition creator industries.
The JSPL chairman also appreciated the Odisha government’s pre-emption policy for ensuring raw materials to the state-based steel industries.
Jindal also lauded the state government’s efforts to hold the auction of iron ore blocks in a transparent and expeditious manner.
Asked about participating in the upcoming auction of iron ore mines in Odisha, the company’s MD, VR Sharma, confirmed that JSPL will participate. “Irrespective of the auction’s outcome, we are confident that the state government would make all out efforts to protect the raw material security for industrial units in Odisha and promote the value addition of the raw material within the state under its pre-emption scheme,” he added.
At present, JSPL is the largest investor in Odisha’s iron and steel sector with an investment of more than ₹45,000 crore.
The company has set up a 6 MTPA steel plant in Angul (the largest in Odisha) and a 9 MTPA pellet plant at Barbil (the biggest in India).
In the next ten years, JSPL would increase its investment in Odisha to more than Rs 100,000 crore.
