Mandya: An assistant director of land records (ADLR) from Karnataka, who was arrested by the Lokayukta was found receiving VIP treatment at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) without any known illness.
A young woman was also found accompanying him in the special room at the hospital.
This incident may never have come to light had Mandya district and sessions judge C Chandrashekar, along with a team, not conducted a surprise inspection of the MIMS Hospital.
On inquiring about the “patient” in the special room, the judge was informed that he is Mohammed Hussain, ADLR of Srirangapatna, whom Lokayukta police arrested in connection with an alleged illegal accounts-related case.
When the judge wanted to know what he was suffering from, the doctor said he did not suffer from any illness that warranted hospitalisation, as reported by timesnow.in.
To make matters worse, a young woman was allegedly found inside the special room where Hussain was staying. When questioned, she reportedly claimed to be the accused’s girlfriend. The judge then questioned the jail authorities about why Hussain had been admitted to MIMS despite not having a condition warranting hospitalisation.
He had been admitted based on the recommendation of the jail doctor, the authorities said.
On being asked if the court had been informed about the hospitalisation, the jail official reportedly admitted that the court had not been informed, stating that the matter would be brought to the court’s notice in future.
This is not for the first time that such an incident has been reported from Karnataka. In November, the Karnataka Prison Department launched an internal inquiry after a series of purported videos surfaced on social media showing inmates at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison allegedly using mobile phones, watching television, and enjoying privileges banned within jail premises.
The clips appeared to depict several high-profile inmates with unauthorised access to electronic gadgets, PTI has reported.
In one of the videos, Umesh Reddy, a rape convict serving multiple sentences for sexual offences, was allegedly seen using an Android smartphone inside his barrack. The footage also showed a television set installed nearby, raising questions about how such devices were brought into the high-security facility.
