New Delhi: Justice Dipak Misra was sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday.
Justice Misra was administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind at a brief ceremony at Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan here.
He succeeded Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, who demitted office on Sunday.
Justice Mishra will remain in office till October 2, 2018. He is the third from Odisha after Justices Ranganath Mishra and Gopal Ballav Patnaik to become CJI.
Born on October 3, 1953, Dipak Misra practicised in constitutional, civil, criminal, revenue, service and sales tax matters in Orissa High Court and the Service Tribunal.
He became the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on May 24, 2010, and was promoted as a Judge to the Supreme Court on October 10, 2011.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik described it as a proud moment for every Odia. He also spoke to the CJI over phone, official sources said.
