Chandigarh: A kabaddi player and promoter was seriously wounded after unidentified gunmen shot at him when he and his team arrived to participate in a tournament in Mohali.

“Kabaddi player Rana Balachauria sustained bullet injuries in the incident. He was critically injured and was rushed to a private hospital in Mohali,” SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans told PTI.

The firing took place at Sohana, near Mohali,

during a private kabaddi tournament that has been ongoing for several days.

According to the police officer, two or three assailants carried out the attack before fleeing the scene on a motorbike.

The attackers have not yet been identified or traced, as investigation is ongoing.

Eyewitnesses told police that the attackers approached Rana on the pretext of clicking selfies but then suddenly opened fire as he approached the ground.

“We first thought firecrackers were being burst,” said an eyewitness, referring to the gunshots.

The attackers also fired in air to scare spectators and prevent them from chasing the miscreants.

The tournament was being held in front of big crowds. According to officials, a well-known Punjabi singer was scheduled to attend the evening matches and give away prizes.
