New Delhi: The united opposition trick did work as BJP and its allies suffered a setback in important constituencies in the by-polls held in as many as 10 states.
Kairana in Uttar Pradesh, touted as a crucial seat which was earlier held by BJP in 2014, went to RLD candidate Tabassum Hasan. She won against BJP’s Mriganka Singh.
“Many voters did vote for BJP, but with a lead of some thousand votes alliance has won. I would like to congratulate the candidate. The alliance has emerged strong and now we have to prepare better for future,” the BJP candidate from Kairana was quoted by ANI.
In Maharashtra, the Bhandara-Gondiya seat went to Sharad Pawar’s NCP.
However, the Palghar constituency in the state was retained by BJP, which faced stern challenge from its own ally Shiv Sena. The party won the seat by a margin of 29574 votes.
In the fourth Lok Sabha seat, Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), a BJP ally is heading towards a win.
Similarly, in Uttar Pradesh’s Noorpur Assembly seat, Samajwadi Party’s Naimul Hasan won by a margin of 6211 votes.
“I want to congratulate all the people who voted for us. This is a defeat for those who do not believe in the democracy. People have given a befitting reply to the BJP,” SP party president Akhilesh Yadav said.
In Bihar, opposition RJD won Jokihat assembly seat by defeating BJP’s ally and its former partner JD(U).
Congress candidate Hardev Singh Ladi won the Shahkot assembly seat from the Shiromani Akali Dal.
