Kandhamal conjoined twins will undergo surgery if found healthy: AIIMS director

New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The conjoined twins, who have been admitted to the neurosurgery department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, will be kept under observation for at least eight to ten days. The children will undergo surgery, only if they are found healthy enough for the same, said AIIMS director Randeep Guleria.
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi on Saturday, Guleria said, “The twins are around two years old and conjoined at their head, that is at the skull. This is a very rare condition seen once in 2.5 million live births. This condition is also associated with high mortality. However, we are trying to see what best can be done to help them.”
He said separating the twins would involve multi-specialty approach. “We will need people from neurosurgery, plastic surgery and paediatrics departments. There will be cardiovascular surgeons to look after circulation. Besides, child psychologists will also be required for providing psychological support to these children. Currently, the children seems to have chest infection. So, we will first ensure that they are healthy enough and ready for an operation.”
