Mumbai: After several hurdles and controversies, actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut’s political drama ‘Emergency’ is running in theatres now.
Kangana, who plays the titular role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film, also donned the director’s cap.
When asked about the aspects of Indira’s life that she did not touch upon in her directorial debut, the actress told The New Indian Express that she only focused on her work and avoided mentioning the controversial affairs and friendships of the former Prime Minister in her film.
“While I was doing research for the film, people spoke about her sensational affairs, and friendships. I was appalled. I said ‘why a woman is limited to the men she has encountered in her life, in whatever capacity? It was very wrong. I have taken special care of not even going into that direction, and strictly looking at her as a Prime Minister and what she did and what she could not, where she rose and what she messed up, as a story,” said Kangana.
Reflecting upon the controversies that surrounded her, the actress said that people judged her on the basis of what men talked about her and she felt it was quite unfair.
“I think it’s very degrading for a woman, to be labelled as … For example, even I have seen in my career as an actress, most of the time my controversy is what men said about me, somebody filed a case or somebody called me a witch or, somebody said something that took over my credibility as an artist. That’s not fair,” said the actress while talking about her personal life.
Kangana’s ‘Emergency’ revolves around the emergency declared by Indira Gandhi and other aspects of her tenure as the prime minister.
The film also features Anupam as late politician Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas as young Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Mahima Choudhary as Pupul Jayakar and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram.
