Mumbai: Actor Kangana Ranaut recently invited Congress MP from Wyanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, to watch her upcoming film Emergency. The actor plays the role of Priyanka’s grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film. She invited Priyanka during an interaction with her fellow MP in Parliament.
“I actually met Priyanka Gandhi ji in Parliament, and the first thing I told her was, ‘Aapko Emergency dekhni chahiye (You should watch Emergency),’” Kangana told the India Today.
“She was very gracious and responded, ‘Yeah, maybe.’ I said, ‘You will quite like it.’”
According to the actor, she had brought sensitivity and depth to the portrayal of Indira Gandhi and the time when the latter’s government had declared Emergency in India.
“I’ve taken great care to portray Mrs. Gandhi with dignity,” Kangana said.
The actor also revealed about the research process, she took up for the role. “During my research, I noticed a lot of focus on her personal life—her relationship with her husband, friends, and controversial equations. I thought to myself, there is so much more to a person. I have taken special care, not even going into those directions, because when it comes to women, they are always reduced to their equation with men around them, and sensational encounters,” she told India Today.
“There was a lot of struggle. You must have seen no one could ever make a film on Mrs Gandhi (Indira Gandhi)…There was a film ‘Kissa Kursi Ka’, Director of that film had to commit suicide and such a situation was created for him. We got the courage to do this film because there is freedom of speech today. We had to show this film to several communities,” she told the ANI.
